We have written before about the Free Dungeons and Dragons Online Eberron Unlimited version launching in Septmember. Since Turbine has started given the massively multiplayer online role playing game for free, DDO’s popularity has soared. But it is not only the fact that Dungeons and Dragons is now free-to-play that has made the difference. A free marketing and word of mouth explosion has actually increased the number of paying subscriptions by over 40 percent.

Since DDO launched in 2006 it has undergone a lot of changes. The $50 download and $15 monthly subscription fee are long gone. Now most of the game is playable for free with extra content available for a much smaller cost with purchases of DDO content packs. Small quests and add-on items lead the way.

More importantly this recent change the the renewed popularity and success of the game has landed the Free DDO a spot at #3 on our Top 10 Free MMORPG Trial list and also the #4 spot on our list of Free MMORPG Games.
