Funcom Age of Conan is Dying: Subscribers Under 100K, $23 Million 4q Loss, CFO Resigns – Plus Combat Tutorial Video

Funcom is still having problems with Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures. It now appears that Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures and Funcom are both dying a slow death.

The slide continues and Funcom reported a 4th quarter loss of $23.3 million. Subscriber levels for Age of Conan are now estimated to be below one hundred thousand. This is acording to DnB NOR Markets.

Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures MMORPG Gameplay Video:

CFO Olav Sandnes Resigns

In light of this poor performance Funcom cheif financial officer Olav Sandnes has resigned. This is a huge change from the 3rd best selling PC game in 2008 and up to seven hundred thousand in paid monthly subscribers. Subscriptions took a nose dive as the Funcom Age of Conan made mistake after mistake. The server merge reduced the number of servers from forty nine to eighteen and co-founder Guate Godager also had resigned.

I was one of those initial AoC subscribers. I was looking for a way to break free of the WoW grind. AoC was fun… at first.

The starter island is a masterpiece and is everything an RPG MMO should be. I especially loved listening to the voice-overs. That’s partly where Funcom failed I think. They set their own bar during the first 20 levels of game-play, and then fell short afterward. I remember being shocked when I left the starter island and found out that there was no more voice-over dialogue. I remember seeing it mentioned that they intended to complete more voice-overs for the quests, but I didn’t stick around to find out. They should have had it all done to start with, or not done it at all. That was just the first disappointment.

On top of that, AoC didn’t really introduce anything innovative or new. In fact, it felt like a step left, instead of a step forward. There was nothing wrong with the classes, per se, just the game-play itself. Most of the interfaces felt awkward and just not that intuitive.

Also, I remember being particularly disgusted with the amount of quests that required you to go from one end of the zone to the other (or one end of the game world to the other), especially considering they weren’t very interesting to start with. Granted, there are only so many scenarios you can come up with as far as quests go in a game where you grind XP or grind quests to level up, but instead of making them as hard as possible to take up time, why not make them easier and focus on other aspects of the game that will appeal to your player base? I think most players now take partial enjoyment from the leveling up, are amused slightly by some of the quests, but all in all just want to get to the “end-game” content.

Speaking of running from one end of the zone to the other, what was with their idea of putting the crafting NPCs in a separate zone on the far end of a zone packed with mobs? Why did the game even need a special zone for a crafting town? That should have been incorporated into the three major cities. On top of that, placing level restrictions on being able to craft is getting old. It doesn’t make sense, even for a fantasy world. I can’t wait for a game that will allow a person to be solely a crafter if they want to be. (And a good game with a bard class would be nice! I miss that from DAoC/FFXI!)

I suppose the general idea I’m trying to get across is that AoC wasn’t well thought out, and had a rough, unfinished feel to it. Today’s MMO players expect more from their games. On top of that, most have played multiple MMOs of high caliber and don’t want to take a step sideways. They want to take a step forward to something better. When it was released, AoC didn’t stand a chance against polished games like WoW.

The market is so competitive now that I think companies will have to try to appeal to niche markets rather than mainstream. For example, most people play WoW because there’s just nothing better available.

I’ve been rather disappointed by the MMOs coming out recently so I’ve turned to F2P games to occupy my spare time while I keep my eyes peeled for the next blockbuster MMO. Right now I’m content with Combat Arms and Runes of Magic.

Combat Arms is a fantastic online FPS that keeps the action pumping. It’s so well laid out that I just can’t believe it’s free. Every time I log in I’m impressed with the gameplay. The only thorn in Combat Arm’s side are the number of hackers that manage to get past their hack detection software. If Nexon could find a way to prevent hackers from getting in the game matches this great game would be golden.

Runes of Magic is a great game that’s free to play and incorporates elements of WoW, UO, Guild Wars, FFXI, and who knows how many others. It’s as if they plucked out the best parts of each game and rolled them into one very entertaining MMO.

Hmm… looks like I dropped a quarter instead of two cents!

I think people who are into PvP have abandoned AoC for Darkfall. Even with the problems they have had with their release, it is one hell of a fun and addictive game. The world is incredibly massive and quite beautiful. It’s not for everyone though, quite brutal and unforgiving.

one of the big mistakes funcom made was never putting a trial, who is going to buy an MMO that you have to pay monthly for, if they dont even get to see if they’re going to actually enjoy playing it first?

The game is growing steady with the new Game developer doing what Guate Goober couldn’t do.

Bradley, thank you for your excellent comment and relating your experience and your point of view. I also enjoy Runes of Magic and share much of your ideas on other MMOs. I think if Funcom had it to do over again they would make many changes, offer free trials, delay the launch, and listen to suggestions from players like you of their MMORPG. Thanks

@Admin, wait for it. Patch 1.0.5 comes out. Dx10 is on live servers already as a “Test” version. Once these changes will be made AoC will be done and people will come back. I know many that already have.

    Mar 30, 2009 at 18:22:39

    @admin and @axle,

I think he’s implying that the addition of Direct X 10 support, essentially improved graphics, will draw people back into the game.

I have to admit that the game has some stunning graphics, even on my crappy mX1600. I almost kept playing just because of those graphics, but it couldn’t compensate for the other areas in which it was lacking.

As for Runes of Magic, it looks like it has tons of potential and I can’t wait to see where Runwaker takes it.

I tried AoC – got into beta, even bought a new PC just for it. I tried very hard to like it but in the end I just couldn’t bear to log on anymore, it became a tedious grind that broke my heart. In the end it was the endless running around that did it for me. I was looking at yet another evening where I would have to spend 20 minutes out of each hour doing nothing but running back and forth across Hyboria and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it anymore.

I quit because their chat sucked and you could solo most the entire game. MMOGs need to not try and follow WoW. I want to group wehn I play an MMO, not solo everything.

They should have used ChatBlade for their Chat. Instead they released with a terrible chat system.

    @ Admin
Couple of things for your consideration in reply to the write up here.

*The subscription numbers that are guessed that you pertain too are solely based off X-fire numbers and have no legimatacy to them. You will see this if you follow up and link the legimacy of what was written. Are you actually saying that X-fire is a totally viable and reliable source for sub numbers? It doesn’t even work with the DX10 client just like it doesn’t with LOTRO dx10 client.

*You will also not get a response from Funcom on sub numbers just the same as you won’t get them from Turbine for LOTRO. FC is a publically traded co. they can’t just give them out as this effects things.

*You also didn’t mention that Funcom has $40 million in cash in the bank from their quartley report and will not need funding this year for AoC or The Secret World. That is a pretty healthy sum of money, they also turned in a profit last quarter. Part of that money lost stems from promotion and marketing at launch.

    * The amount of servers is 26 not 18 – this puts the number higher than EQ2. The game is about to go out in Korea very soon and the publisher there already has forked out $$$ in advance. The game just launch localised in Russia and Poland pretty successfully and has garnered much talk on fan sites and the official forums in these other language markets. In comparison WAR just wiped a bucket load of servers off leaving just as many viable ones as AoC now. You are also implying that Gaute left when the merges happened – again really old news mate.

    * You will also note from the last quarter results that subscriber retention is way up. There is a good reason for this as everything in what was wrote in the article bar the resignation and posting monetry loss was OLD OLD news, talking months ago here. There is no doubt that AoC lost a lot of people but things are very much different now.

About Patch 1.05 that was all the buzz in topic of conversation at the GDC just. I will do a copy and paste of some conversations on the test server with devs players have in an open floor format. Reason is you need to sub to have access but it might provide ppl with a bit better understanding of what is coming over the next few months. Yes it is a wall of text!

Little tidbit from the test server conversation here:

    Quote: Player:

When you do the Itemnization, could you make everyone who wants a bit more variety in their armours very happy and remove the Class restriction from Cultural sets?

That would still leave them with obvious benefits to some classes over others but, for the sake of example, the Medium sets for ranger and bear shaman would be wearable by anyone who can wear Medium.

This allows players to customize their characters further without a requirement on Funcom to make 12 class-appropriate sets for each culture.

    Ilaliya = Crafting Dev replies

“Yeah, we’re actually planning on doing this.

But it’s for completely unrelated reasons that I can’t disclose right now.”

    Crafting Dev:

“Without revealing too much, you should know that the re-itemization patch will bring a lot more potential variation to gear in general. This is great news for crafting.

Under the new itemization, the DT culture set will be tailored for a DT and the Conq set will be tailored for a Conq. At least, that’s the goal — and we’ll get feedback from Test Live to ensure this goal is ultimately met. But we mainly used for inherent stats on each of these sets the “cross-over” stats (appealing to the soldier in each class). While, in this specific case, the use of new gem mechanics we’re introducing in the gem revamp will allow both the DT and the Conq to really customize either set for their class needs.

That being said, the DT set is still tailored for DTs, and the Conq for Conqs. But both being soldiers there’s a lot of commonality there. And in general when re-itemizing crafted gear we tried to move what’s not common to different classes using the same material type into the gem choices. Of course, that’s a lot easier to do for heavy armor than say light armor or cloth armor (which is why we duplicate crafted cloth into melee/magic versions).”

However, by using the new gems, that set could be “tailored” to suit any of the classes of soldier, which is obviously dependant on the gems used?”

    Crafting dev:

“That’s pretty accurate. The new itemization (and indeed, new RPG formulas) allows us to do a lot of variation that wasn’t available under the old itemization system. What this means is two sets with soldier-common stats can look very different. Which is useful because the DT and Conq, even as soldiers, have different roles in PvE and PvP groups. And you’re right about specific stats. Physical Stamina Tap is a prime example of something that’s more DT oriented, but also not completely useless to Conqs.

On the Helm/Chest/Legs of crafted culture armor, the two gems together will account for 22% of the total item’s power. On the other three pieces the single gem will account for 16% of the item’s total power. We felt that was the right amount of “customization” room for these sets.”

Patch 1.05 is a big one, 5 months in the making. 1.05 will bring a lot of juicy needed loving for crafting and the rebalance of the items will also be rebalanced in terms of DPS. It will touch on many area’s with the game. Effects many things.

The best tip to give if you still have a Funcom account for AoC visit the page from the funcom.com and email yourself a buddy key to a different alt email address and try it out for 7 days free whilst waiting for the free trial that is coming very soon.

You will find no more bugs that any other mmorpg out there (from my experience) you will find performance smooth and you will find a proper DX10 client (in a test phase accessible) inclusions 3 times the amount of DX10 parts than other mmo’s. You will also find populations healthy on nearly all servers.

Every single patch AoC has gotten has been proclaimed as something that will fix AoC. And yet it continues to get worse with every patch.

Just look at all the bugs with socketting during the first 6 months of the game. Every patch where it was supposed to be fixed just introduced more bugs. Meanwhile the dev spent all their time fixing small issues whilst ignoring big bugs (Like the old gray map and then client crash bug).

They never knew what they wanted classes to be, Necromancers often got buffed big time and then nerfed into the ground even worse then what they were earlier, nearly every week.

They were so many promised features (some of which which featured on the box) and were never delivered.

castles sieges didnt gave u anything (no gold no money)
    + really laged

all u have at lvl 80 is ganking in keshata ,and my opinion ganking isnt pvp and cant keep players to pay evry months just to log to game and look for gank or be ganked by some 20 players from same guild who really bored .

if aoc will add more pvp content ,and fix bugs i will love to back to it.

Thanks for your comment. It is frustrating when you put so much into a game only to have it disappoint you. And they wonder why players turn to hacks and cheats so often. There is no excuse to run around for 20 minutes of every 1 hour just to play a game.

    Mar 31, 2009 at 08:42:08

Hi, first off Admin, thanks for replying to the people here, all to many times I have seen them ignored on articles like this. I have played AoC since launch. Seen its up and downs. The server merge really isn’t a bad thing there were too many low pop servers, conbining thme really boosted the pop of the remaining servers and recharged them with life. Since then I have noticed a steady growth in population on Cimmeria. the new dierector they have was a breath of freash air, the game seemed to be stalled with Guate in charge. Patches and updates are not coming all that quickly, but they are coming. I would also like ot point out that there are new quests added and the changes coming in the future look very promising. The main problem i see with AoC is that there are many people out here with the mentality that every game is released without bugs. I really have to laugh at that after having played MMO’s since Ultima Online. Every game has its share of bugs, bashers, haters and so on… AoC is a unique gamet that isn’t for everyone. people who have stuck it out have found themselves in a pretty rich and evolving game that they enjoy. I have found that most people who have quit really didnt giive the game a chance. those that have will agree that AoC will grow on you.

  29. admin
    Mar 31, 2009 at 08:42:36

Thank you for your comment. I think the DX10 support and improved graphics will help the game but there is only so much that a pretty scene can do. If they reworked much of the content and environments as well I could see it making more of an impact.

  30. Bradley
    Mar 31, 2009 at 08:48:03

Well, Bob Noel had one of the same gripes I did. You spend too much time running back and forth.

Here’s something to consider. Even if they do improve the graphics, how many people have systems that can handle the upgrade? How many people are already playing on middle or low graphics settings? How much of their player base will it really impact? I’m not familiar with how DX works, but it seems as though it would only benefit people who are already running at max graphics.

And like you said, Admin guy, it’s gonna take more than improved scenery to save the game. 20 minutes wasted is still 20 minutes wasted, even if the dirt you’re running on looks real.

  31. admin
    Mar 31, 2009 at 08:49:51

Thank you for your comment. Thank you for sharing your experience. It seems like AoC has had so many things working against it from day 1 that it is only the amazing appeal of the game that has given it this much success. Yet gamers are impatient and fickle and quickly move on. Funcom needs to get their act together and turn this ship around. Unfortunately they seem to have waited until the ship was already sinking.

    Mar 31, 2009 at 08:53:59

Ya, well one day our kids are going to look at screenshots from today’s MMOs and say something like:

“What? It was just … on a screen? What? You couldn’t feel the breeze or the terrain textures? You mean it wasn’t even 3D!????!!!”

And then we’ll feel old. Fail.

    Mar 31, 2009 at 13:25:29

I really enjoyed AoC, especially from level 0-20. I was also really disappointed that the voice overs were gone after level 20. In a nuthsell, AoC has the best graphics and very good combat style. I played melee and thought it was pretty well done. I now play WoW, and is just a way more solid and complete game. Obviously because its an older more developed game. I really had high hopes for AoC, and was hoping to get back into it, once the contest and class balance was better. Too bad…

I was a little disappointed with AoC, our WoW guild was really looking forward to the release, but it was just a huge shame. We all bought it pre-ordered for release day. We couldn’t really find each other easily due to instancing, there didn’t really seem to be a proper end to the game. 2 of our members hit top level, and then quit about 3 days later, mainly because nothing was really that clear cut. It was just a shame really! Never touched it since.

Funcom has lied, deceived, and produced shotty content after shotty content. AoC has failed, and rightfully so.

As a gaming community, our path is clear and compelling. What we must do now is to convince all those currently playing to give it up and play a better game… shouldn’t be too hard, since most other MMOs are much better. Heck, show them EQ1. That’ll do it.

Let’s end this abomination we call AoC and put Failcom out of business

AoC is far from dead and people take joy is bashing MMOs they know nothing about or actually played. I know numerous people that say bad thing about AoC and never actually played it!!! A friend of mine was bashing AoC because of what he ‘heard’, then actually played it after the recent changes and loves it!

AoC is the best MMO out there for several reasons and the initial launch issues are gone. AoC needs more content and positive changes ARE happening.

I love to read about all the things they are displeased with on their purchase.
I cant remember how many bowls of popcorn I’ve emptyed from reading posts like these. Its pure entertainment :D

Funcom is now giving out free trials for people to try out the game and hopefully buy it afterwards if they like it. Its not some desperate attemp like some have said, its a marketing thing, like when you see a commercial on TV and want to buy it, but Funcom takes it one step further, you actually have the option to try it out first before you fork out the dollars.

I understand you want to warn people from doing that, since you made the ‘mistake’ of buying the game yourself. Why on earth cant you just let people decide for themselves if they want to play it or not.

I played everquest since Ruins of Kunark (1st expansion now there is 13) then quit for WoW, quit for EQ2. Quit for EQ. In the times Between i played just about every Free MMO and SWG and just a ton of games. For those who say this is the worst game ever, i just laughed. No you cannont solo everything, theres even “group” specific quests… You would know Post #17 if you acually Played the game instead of jerking off to the nudity in the game. I have told everyone and still will tell everyone to give it a try now that the Trial is out. I’ve invited 4 Trial players to our guild on SET and all 4 have purchased the game and are probably playing as i type this. GO TRY IT dont belive me, or anyone else…just belive it for yourself

I have been with AoC almost since launch. The improvements to the game have been many since then. I will say that I have taken a break from it over the past several weeks but that was mainly due to IRL stuff. Most of the comments that I have read have all been true, but I feel that the comments on not moving or takeing a step forward in the MMORPG world are incorrect. I have tried all sorts of MMO’s and for me I am not interested in playing nor can I get as absorbed in a game that looks like WOW. No offense to any that play it but realism that is to say graphically whether fantasy or reality based is what keeps me tuned into to AoC. The “Grind” that is part of most MMO’s I have played was eased considerably once I joined a guild which I now lead. That combined with the new and upcoming content makes AoC for me one of the top games I have ever played. Did Funcom make mistakes? You bet your Hyborian Arse they did, but they are making those changes. The DX10 has launched and graphically is even more stunning than before (but still has issues to be corrected). The addition of lvl 80 quests and areas has given a resurgence at least to my guild and also has inticed several of the original guild members that left for Warhammer and other game launches to renew accounts and start up again. There are several things on the horizon, too many to mention here but this game, it’s lore that it is based on and continual graphical and content additions for me make it one of the best games I have ever played….despite the kinks!

I used to LOVE Anarchy Online. When the news came out that they were going to focus on AoC, I was devastated.

If this much time and effort would have gone into making Anarchy Online 2, I’d still be one of their paid subscribers. There’s a huge death of space MMO games, and they had the opportunity to fill it, but instead went with yet another fantasy game.

Now would SOMEONE please do a decent space MMO? I’ll join!

    hi all

as an old wow player and always cleared the end content( except tier3) i just got tired of the same, clear everything, having the best gear, weapons even for off-spec, having lots of gold and mats and pets, all in a short period of time and mounts and a cartoon look.
i have nothing against wow but think…

1-if wow was your first online game it was released like 5 years ago and remember how it was?( and cant compare since both games are different class of game)
it( wow) looked like shit and there were not that many instances, AOC brought more end content and AOC has less than a year since the released time.
avery said a very true thing, the game is really cool if you are the kind of person you like them, other prefer very fantasy game with bright colors and very cartoon characters but AOC is different and awesome for its type. you will see it when it has 4 year out in the market, it will be just awesome

Hi, I have played AOC for some time now, there is some reasonable arguments above “not the ones claiming this is a wow clone, you have to remember every mmo borrows its framework from another”. In my opinion this game is very fun and I love game company’s that do not try to follow the norm. Alot has changed and the coming 1.05 patch will fix many bugs and game mechanics.

There is a free trial setup now, please try this out after 1.05 and give this game one more shot, after that if it is still not for you then it’s not for you.

In the mmo world it is so hard to rate it with the consent changing of the mechanics and world.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with your line of thinking and everyone should try out the free trial and see for themselves how the game has changed. If Funcom would have just listened to their players in the first place they would have never had subscription numbers problems.

have to add that in now im level 58 an it is getting better and better, the game is just that great or the idea the developers have about it that they continue improving everything on it.
soon it will be just awesome, try it and pay at least one month and when you hit 40+ u will see incredible places, history and more fun

Thank you for your comment. That is good that the later game is more interesting. I noticed Funcom is offering rewards for those who have paid subscriptions longer than 6 months. Does it take longer than 6 months to get to level 58?

AoC was the most fun I have ever had. I was an active member of the biggest guild on our server and made many lifelong friends. The only thing that I didn’t really enjoy on the PvP server was the serial gankers who would be level 80 and actively hunt the low level characters. The guild decided that Warhammer was where they wanted to be so we left en mass. I gave Warhammer a really good go for a while, but just couldn’t get into it, so with real life commitments and no real love for the game, I left.

Lately though, I have been missing the world of Hyboria and have a burning desire to return. Time and commitments are still a factor, but will try and make time for it. It’s funny how many of the people I have spoken to have made comments about Tortage (starting point in AoC) being the best part of the game. I absolutely hated it and could not wait to get out of the place. That is my only real deterrent in going back. But I suppose that we have to take the good with the bad. I just hope that if I do return, they stick with it as I personally thought it had so much potential, if only they had listened to what we had to say, the game would have been legendary.

I am a 1 year player, since the first day the game was alive.

I must say that … ITZ AMAZING! Simply.

I am looking at all the opinions posted here. I know at least the same number people who are complaining of AoC that are satisfied of the game itself.

Who played daily the other games (likw WoW, Dark Age of Camelot, other similar MMORPG) should remain playing there, because these kind of players clearly confront their old experience (for them wonderful) with a new experience.
It happens that following: you know what you are losing, you don’t know what you will find… that’s the motto guys.

I was in the average age range for AOC, which was posted at about 29. I started playing the game about 2 months after release, and had a pretty good time. Yes, there were problems, but I looked past them. Why? Because, WOW is like playing a crappy Saturday morning cartoon, and I’m thirty now. Unfortunately, I wont grow up and stop playing video games :), so I have to find a game that’s themed more to my age range. Growing up I enjoyed the Robert E. Howard fantasy as much as I did Tolkein, and to the games credit; a lot of the quests revolve around fictional historical accounts in the novellas. If the game was centered around the teenage mutant ninja turtles however, the bugs and bad attitude of the first game director would have sent me running. My point is…..creating a good atmosphere and choosing good lore for a game is 50% of the battle! Even if you have to steal it from a dead momma’s boy like Howard.
To end, I’m going to revive “Sequal” the level 60 Stygian Necromancer…No matter how nerfed or overpowered he may be. Well, at least for 7 days…:)

oh please AOC is not dying! i do agree on the first 20 levels are 10/10! and once you leave tortage there isnt much a stright line to goals and leveling but thats the fun of the game is challenging, if you cant stick at the game cause you got bored then you havent made it to level 40+ or you havent joined a very good guild.. truth is AOC gets my 10/10 and its mature content and graphics are much better than WOW’s cartoony thing they got going on.. all in all i think AOC is amied for the more mature players while WOW is for all age ranged.

    Agree with spartan

ht ecomputer might be an issue but 1-have you see the freaking graphics? lol i love that( and never seen it before in other game btw) and let me tell you that going thru tortage is more fun than going to a waste land and killing pigs and pigs and pigs and pigs… i played wow for 3 years i wish AoC came out before so i could stick with it, btw the last update(yesterday) changed lots of things and now is even better, give couple years to the game and willl be much better than other games in which you see the same content on each expa.

I have read every comment. and …..hmmm
I played this game from Beta.
It is easily one of the poorest supported games I have ever played. Give it a chance hheheheh. Sadly I did wasted lots of subs.
Left came back still one of the poorest games I have ever played.
Any changes to the game will not help. This game is not interesting. Games with unique game-play or great quests stories etc are winners this is a loser.
Its all about choice but if you bury your head in the sand and don’t try other games you might think this is a top game …its not.
I have played about 50 On-line games and still sub about 4. I would never sub this game again its extremely poor.
Graphics are important but not essential, this game is only graphics.
As I have a really top end P.C and net connection these problems were not problems for me…but.
I tried the game out on the high end not standard specs Funcom suggested as I have 10 computers. The game failed miserably. Improved the game recently…. not true its a poor game. Ignore me if you wish but I am being honest.

I find it ridicules to expect people to pay to play on a PC. Most new games are being developed on X-Box,Wii and Playstation. How could corporations expect to draw people back to a decent PC game when you have to fork out 15-30 bucks a month for the priveledge to play a game? They do not even give the option for single person play without connecting, which seems a bit greedy.
