iPhone WoW Mobile Gaming with Vollee: World of Warcraft Will Suck on a Cell Phone

It Will Suck: Vollee Streams WoW on iPhone Like Onlive Streams to Browser

You may have seen the below possibly fake Vollee iPhone Wow video. In it World of Warcraft is streaming to the iPhone. Mobile WoW has been a dream of many gamers for a long time. Whether it is real or not one thing is certain. It will suck.

Games like these are so graphics intensive that either the bandwidth requirements (larger than just playing the game yourself than through Vollees server despite compression) will either prevent Wow on iPhone from working at all or well enough to matter, or internet service providers will immediately begin capping bandwidth, or the fee paid to Vollee or Onlive will need to be so high that it will negate the benefits of this service. Why do I say this? Well the fact that the Vollee web site has been down for over 48 hours (probably due to server/bandwidth load due to the rumor of this story) does not exactly fill me with confidence.

When Will Mobile Wow Be a Reality?

Sure it is fun to think that this is a reality now. But it will suck. Only when hardware has advanced so much that our cell phones are basically like laptops complete with graphics cards, processors, and operating systems that could run World of Warcraft without Vollee will the experience using Vollee be good enough.

    I have seen the Vollee demo a few months ago in Israel and it is amazing. What makes the game really playable on the iPhone is the fact that you can use the touch screen to control and interact with the game objects – pretty good replacement for the mouse and also very maneuverable. Do not know if it catches – but good luck Vollee.

    You kidding? “It will suck”? I don’t think anyone is suggesting you enter Ulduar on your iphone, but imagine checking auctions, mail, waiting on a rare spawn…. Awesomesauce.

    @Bosco
    Thank you for your comment. How about this: Vollee’s web site has been down for 4 days. Still think their servers will reliably stream WoW to your iPhone. Imagination is the key word.

    Their server has no relevance as they are creating a client to the blizzard servers. To make their own server would be illegal, and, pointless because the Ah would be bare and none of the players you know would be around :)

    WoW will be possible on the iPhone *natively* in two more generations if apple continues with Their current pattern of updating the device. The current hardware includes an HSDPA antenna which will boost network spped from ~300 Kbps to 7.2 Mbps. AT&T’s LTE network will undoubtedly have enough bandwidth, at 60 Mbps at which point the iPhones RAM, CPU, and GPU will be the deciding factors. I think if not by the next iPhone, for sure the one afer that Intels Atom processors will be both small enough and energy efficient enough for apple to put them into it’s new iPhones. This would not only provide a significant speed boost (current atom processors are about 4x faster), but Mac OS X (the OS the iPhone uses) is optimized for intel processors architecture rather than ARM. The boosts from running on a further optmized processor are not quite clear but definitely would not be negligible.

    You should also note that the iphone 3gs also holds a very nice 3D graphics chip on board capable of doing HL2 lvl graphics. Unlike the previous iphones. If they can put similar graphics in PSPs, and Nintendo DS its not a stretch for the iphone.
