Does Frogster Really Need to Take Down the Runes of Magic Servers Including Web Site and Forums for 24 Hours?
This is great news and I really look forward to this release but does Frogster Interactive really need to take down their servers for 24 hours from Monday September 14, 2009 at 3 am PST until Tuesday September 15, 2009 at 3 am PST? And why in the world will the forums and web site be down at the same time for that long? I mean a new design is great but can’t you guys launch it in less than 24 hours? Did you ever hear about stylesheets and includes?

And Has Frogster Fixed the Runes of Magic Client Download Problems Yet?
Even more concerning is that players will need to download the new client. But has Frogster Interactive fixed the Runes of Magic download problems or not? Since it was not mentioned I am guessing no and this could cause major headaches.
Read more about the release here and about the ridiculously long downtime here.

So we have to download the client ALL OVER AGAIN??

No, I have already updated (not downloaded) the client to the latest version. It was slow as balls, but doesn’t really matter since Frogster doesn’t seem to be capable of patching their relatively small number of servers in under 24 hours.
Other than a few of the very early MMOs (like EQ1 in the early years), I have rarely seen an MMO that takes so long to patch even a major release.
I also don’t understand why forums need to be down while the game servers are being patched, except of course that the company doesn’t want to deal with the barrage of angry posts about the servers being down and the patching taking so long. My take on that? Deal with it, cos we’re all posting anyway on hundreds of other forums, often the ones most people find out about new MMOs from.
If they really wanted to do it right, they would make the next client patch include the ability to download the one after in the background while playing, so that everyone has the client ready to go long before the server patch. Then, when the time comes to patch the servers, they can concentrate on making it go fast so that players can get back in the game faster, preferably before they find something else to play.
