Top 10 Free MMORPGs – HD Video & Screenshots

Updated! Below is a list of the top 10 Free MMORPGs available online. These massively multiplayer online role playing games vary widely but they are all free to play and they are ordered starting with the best.

Check out the below images, high definition videos, and links to additional information about each of the below best free online MMORPG games. The list has now grown to the top 15 MMORPG games.

Top 10 Free MMORPGs

1. Runes of Magic – It was a difficult decision but Runes of Magic is our top choice and it is not hard to see why. With an impressive amount of new content such as the Runes of Magic Chapter III: The Elder Kingdoms, The Elven Prophecy and Ice Dwarf Kingdom along with 2 million gamers playing Runes of Magic it is an impressive free MMORPG. Despite the fact that Runes of Magic download problems continue, it is the obvious choice for any former World of Warcraft player looking to save some money.

2. Free Realms – This Sony Online Entertainment Free to play MMORPG is a close second. With 8 million players Free Realms is certainly popular. If not for the more cartoonish graphics and younger audience intended gameplay and certain other drawbacks it would clearly be the number one free-to-play MMORPG. The game is currently on the PC with a Playstation 3 version expected to come out some time next year. While this game is in many ways a typical fantasy genre with the standard features (such as training the Free Realms Pets) the classes also include a Ninja and Kart Driver. You can change classes without creating a new character. Combat is optional and a playable trading card game is also available.

3. Quake Live Arena MMOFPS – The Quake Live massively multiplayer online first person shooter is a fan favorite. It made our list of the Top 10 MMOFPS Games so when you add in the fact that it is also free to play it is a lock. Sure the Quake Live billboard ads are annoying but who cares? The Quake Live launch saw 113,000 registrations in the first 6 hours.

Runescape is NOT the original Free to Play MMO. This was actually preceded by Graal Online. Regardless, the inclusion of Runescape has killed any credibility of this list.

    Currently Playing: Runes of Magic

    @Arcie,
Thank you for your message. I think that 5 million people would argue with you. How many people are still playing Graal Online? Right, that’s what I thought…..

I’ve gotta say, I’m with Arcie on this one. Runescape is more of a “kiddie game” and compared to some of the newer free MMOs, it can’t even hold a candle. Don’t forget MUDs were the first MMOs (not sure if Graal was a MUD, tbh). And just because people play it, doesn’t mean it’s good. But then, people say you shouldn’t criticize something that is free. As for me, I played Runescape for about a week before I completely lost interest. There are a lot of gamers who agree with me.

Finally, put your bias elsewhere, because Runescape is more around 150k active players, possibly 200k. That is nowhere *near* 5 million. And don’t ask me how they would count “active subscriptions” if most people are playing for free then most of them probably have no *real* interest in the game, as a paying customer does. As an example, my one week of playing before giving up on it for being such a terrible game.

i also lost interest in runescape after a few weeks. it just didnt grab my attention like other games i’ve played. i can think of at least two games that deserve that number 10 spot or better. Knight Online is probably when of the best free mmo’s i’ve played and its fairly small so it doesnt take up a lot of space on my laptop. another great game is Gunz. you need to have fast hands for the game but its deffinitly fun and different than most mmo’s online now.

I played runescape years ago when their wausnt many mmos around i was playing runescape and Dransik online now called ashen empires it was a fairly good game BACK in the day lol but i think the number 10 spot prolly coulda been given to requiem bloodymare or even scions of fate those are both great games besides the major grinding in scions the item mall is great and the special spells are fun as hell, and for requiem that is a great game if u love horror mmos and the graphics are pretty good also has a great quest system in it as well, as for runescape if they took some of that money from what they make and up the graphics like they did years ago runescape could be a force to reckon with, ive played MANY MANY mmos and runescape was an awesome game years ago

Yeah, no where did I say Graal was amazing (though I do feel its not WORSE than Runescape). What I did say was Graal predated Runescape as a F2P MMO. Therefor, its not the original. Now, why I said the inclusion of Runescape kills the credibility of the list is, Runescape is outdated and does not hold a candle to most of the F2Ps out there now. Its inclusion here seems injected just to appease a fanbase. Now, if you honestly feel the game is still considered one of the top 10 F2P MMOs after playing games not listed here such as: Silkroad Online, Dungeons and Dragons Unlimited, Fly for Fun, etc… There are dozens of F2P MMOs that overshadow the un”original” F2P MMO, therefor, including it on this list, in my opinion, invalidates the list.

    @Devon
MUDs were technically different than MMOs. While the very basic concept is the same, they are both kept as two seperate entities since MUDs are still played in large numbers. To be completely upfront, the FIRST MMO was Neverwinter Nights (not the 3d one, the old AOL game).

I agree with most. for a current list of the best free online games, runescape has no place. Just like if you were to have a list of the best CURRENT pay to play MMO’s Everquest would prob not be on it. BUt it was defiantly one of the all time bests, especially for what it did for the MMO community, same with Ultima.

Now if this was a list of all time best free MMO’s, then yes Runscape has a place. I remember playing this back when there was no such thing as a “members” account, and it was truly free (no having to buy the best items, or pay a fee to access some content). Back then, this was what there was, and it was great..and it showed the world there is a market for this genre of games where you can make money off a “free” game. (original runescape membership accounts were $5 a month…and they had thousands of paying subscribers back then.

Yes runescape is run down but these days the runecape graphics and gameplay don’t compare to the ones you can download, in it’s day runescape was a good game and it was loved but not many people actually like the game anymore because of all of the children randomly following you and asking stupid questions AND the fact that about 1/2 of the accounts created are level 3′s

Its fine to like a game and support it as, in your opinion, a good game. Advocating that, however, opens your idea up to discussion. The person who made this list not only said he felt it belonged somewhere on a top 10 F2P 3d game list, but went so far as to say he felt it belonged as KING! Runescape has not evolved. The HD version is still clunky, lacking in detail, repetitious, and boring. The mechanics are archaic and for anyone with a choice between Runescape and a game like Runes of Magic, the choice is pretty clear.

Ok first off, runescape is no longer current. Anarchy online deserves to be on the list, as well as Knight online, Luna Online, Ragnarok Online, 2 Moons, and a whole lot of others competing for the 10 spot. Runescape is more of an adventure(ish) game than anything. It reminds me more of Ultima than anything else. That would be an RPG. Sure it has an MMO aspect but face it..its a browser based game! I didnt see Adventure Quest (flash based) on your list and it has just as many players as Runescape. Don’t get me wrong, Runescape is definately a decent game, for the kids at the local public library…as someone in their late 20s I would definately like something that challenges me. Something I can pick up and put down as needed. I play Luna online for that reason. I can play with my 6yo daughter or go solo and still have just as much fun as i did when i played pay 2 play mmorpgs.

RuneScape is a far better game than people may first think. Most F2P games have nothing but combat, and it’s thrown at you like a bitch. MapleStory, for example, is just one huge, long, combat grind. RuneScape adds A LOT of non-combat options (being one of the only free MMOs where half of the players are non-combat pures; people with insanely high skills, but only LV3), as well as unique quests that are far more than “kill x monsters.” People look at the graphics (which are very unimportant to a game) and automatically call it crap because of that.
The problem is that RuneScape F2P IS crap. There are very, VERY few quests and P2P have far more training options on, well…everything. Basically, RuneScape should hardly be called an F2P game. It’s a wonderful P2P, but the F2P does not have enough to offer.

The point is, it was listed on here as the “original F2P MMO” which it is not. Also, its listed on a list of the best F2P MMOs, which it shouldnt be. I posted that response because I want to make sure everyone knows there are other options to Runescape! Allods, Runes of Magic, Rohan, I mean, there are so MANY F2P MMOs now that Runescape should be empty.

I have never played Runescape so I am not qualified to say wether it is top 10 material or not. The fact that it has split a heck of a lot of peoples opions suggests it may not be that bad a call.

Arcie, you must be having a bit of a tongue in cheek moment when you write

“Regardless, the inclusion of Runescape has killed any credibility of this list.

    Currently Playing: Runes of Magic”

You say that Runscape killed the credibility of the list but admit to be currently playing Runes of Magic. This is top of the list and thus surely gives the list some credibility.

Also lists are just lists…it is not a set of facts. If someone had written their top 10 foods would you have said they are wrong?

Bob, it depends on the gamer. Me personally didn’t like PWI very much because it’s not very social until you get high enough level to travel to another city. Even then it’s trade spam. In my opinion I think that Dream of Mirror Online, by aeria games and entertainment should have been somewhere on this list because of it’s massive social base.

Honestly…I played Runescape, got to a pretty high level, and quit. My friends wasted 5 years of thier lives on this silly game, and comparatively to World of Warcraft, Runes of Magic, or even Aion, Runescape looks like something they put together in a month. Plus its not free. the Game sucks without being a member, which COSTS MONEY. So for all you runescape players, its not a bad game, just stop saying its a good one :)

@Blob, Perfect World is not as good as Runes of Magic, in my opinion. RoM overshadows PWI in a number of areas. While I cant make my RoM character a stick figure (something I hated in PWI anyways), it has a decent amount of customization once you get past the login screen. PWI boasts a HUGE customization system which, unless you change an INI file to reduce yourselves to a stick or bloat yourselves to a blueberry (Willy Wonka reference), once you don gear, its unnoticable. Either way, getting into the beef of the game, every Archer is the same, every Warrior is the same, etc. Runes of Magic allows for a lot of variations on each character with the multi-class system. For instance, I am a Rogue/Knight. My character is very different from a Rogue/Priest or a Rogue/Scout. The party roles shift based on your class combination and gear. I did enjoy all my time in PW (before it was international, btw), but the CS was too expensive and the grind was too harsh. Runes of Magic is end-game focused with a lot of end-game content and a short trek to get there.

@John, every new top 10 F2P MMO list I see varies greatly from number 10 to number 3. I see a huge range of choices by individual gamers and critics alike. However, the top 2 spots, often trading due to taste, are almost ALWAYS, Runes of Magic and Dungeons and Dragons Online. Both have an excessive amount of content for F2P MMOs, decent graphics (DDO much nicer though), and solid gameplay (even though I didnt like DDO). My problem with these lists lies in the lack of company discussion. A game is only as good as the publisher providing its support and so far, Frogster America, fails all over the place. I love the game and keep playing because my server, Osha, is full of a lot of great players. But Frogster America has caused a lot of great players to leave due to thier apparent lack of ability to run an MMO.

I really liked RoM…actually, I still like it. I’ve since recently started playing DDO, and I immediately joined a great clan who Vent all the time, so I’m pleased with the community, and I’m digging the game.

I do think Silk Road should have been on this list…it’s a no-brainer for me. If you’re going by ‘popularity’ I can see why Runescape is on the list…but honestly, it just doesn’t even come close to the production value and entertainment of all the recent free MMOs.

you guys are all gay for talking about rune-scape for so long. completely diverted from topic. there are too many free mmo’s out these days to have a top 10 list. its all a matter of perception and opinion anyways. Why not make a list of great mmo’s currently out, give your own unbiased opinion and review, rather than showing favor, cuz there will always be haters hating on your opinion.Did I mention I hated Rune scape from the beginning? TheSteuck,

Top ten lists are made by people who tend to know the topic pretty well. We go by their opinions, in hopes they will be bias and warranted.

What people *do* care about, are douche bags like you, acting all badass, when you’re just a punk kid with an attitude looking for attention. Are you even out of high school yet? Then what the hell are you doing pretending you’re the shit, and everyone else is ‘gay’…you barely know what you want out of life…stop acting like an asshole version of Gandhi.

whats with the hostility mayne? Why would you want a biased opinion? I Might prefer FPS MMO’s to MMORPG’s. You want me as the writer, who won’t even appreciate some key elements that appeal to you, telling you what to play? You dont know this author personally, you dont know how well he knows the genre. You dont know me either. Your not acting any different then I. Shit talk tastes like shit no matter who’s talking it. Your gonna make a deal about being an ass, then turn around and be an ass to me?
