I have to say that Runes of Magic takes FOREVER to Install. After downloading the 2.8 GB .rar file (pretty large for a .rar file), it took FOREVER to install. Finally I said to myself, ok, good to go. BUT NO. Now the Client proceeds to perform an upgrade on top of the download which took HOURS.
I know it is free and all but come on. No other free client out there takes this long to download, install, and upgrade. This makes for a very bad first experience for new users. Can’t you guys get a little bit more efficient with the installation files or speed up your mirrored update servers?
Can’t you run some upgrades in the background during gameplay after install and install them after the user plays the game for a little while and then shuts it down?
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Does anyone out there agree with me?

Wow dude i have attempted to download the client 10 times now and the furtherest i got through it was 2.89gb out of 3.0 gb then is stopped downloading and crossed out… i was so angry and im cbf now. really want it to work =/ ….. so im kinda the same problem.

same problem guy: yeah the best thing to do is just let it run for the whole day or overnight if you can. Just try different mirrors and different sites and it should eventually complete. It is too bad that they didn’t optimize the download and installation files.

Mine stuck at 10% but if you look at the top right corner the version number keeps changing so I know it’s making progress. I just don’s know how much because the Total bar just stays at 10%!!!

The bottom bar “total” remains at 10% the whole time ignore it…

Alright… why the 10 %. guys, your not being stuck at 10 % what you need to pay attention to is the version number. the game, fresh copy, the site gives you ( and all mirrors ) is 2.0.0.1000 the problem is, the current game client is at 2.0.1.1000 Meaning you have to do 10 THOUSAND updates. yes, 10,000. That is why it’s taking so long. your client isnt “messed up” it just takes a while to do all the updates. ( For those of you who remember UO… yeah… 6 hours of updates
) so only way to get threw it, is let it be and watch the lil version number go up

I just installed this last night and I totally agree it took forever especially with the updates I mean if they have updated that much from the original package and it is beta still shouldn’t they release a new rar with a newer package? Also the updates stay at 10% the entire time then at the very end pop to 100% and the most annoying part about the updates is they take focus away from any other window because they keep poping windows up so I couldn’t even talk to a friend on AIM without clicking the window every word.

Ok i managed to download a december 12th 2008 release client of the game from Gamershell.com and am patching it , im at 41% and it has been about 4 hours LOL. im guessing there is probly so many ppl downloading the update from 1 hub (they prob only have 1 mirror in germany somewhere). I have downloaded the game, and am now patching. The patch has been patching all night long and when i look at it in the morning it has been stopped by a popup that askes what language i want. My patch is currently at .1815 so about 16 more patches until i finally get to look at the game. It does take forever to do and it does stay at 10, and each patch takes about 10minutes so i’m about done!

For anyone who finds this I hope I was not too late. I had the same problems, then I googled around and found ended up at bigdownload query=runes+of+magic&invocationType=hdbigdownload You can fully download all four parts of the game there, and the patches. Once you have downloaded parts 1,2,3,4 extract them all to a folder (I made a folder on my desktop called ROM) Open the folder and double-click the setup, and that’s it! To patch you will probably have to place the patches inside the folder ROM uses to install, e.g. C:/Program Files/Runes of Magic, and then double-click the patches in order, like this: Run 1796 first, then run 1797, ect. This will patch your game just like the downloader would. Hope this helps!

If you use the FOG downloader, the client comes fairly quickly. However, when it came time to download the patches I was averaging at about 12 kb/s. The FOG downloader seems to me to be the quickest way to get this piss done with.

For those of you wondering, or currently having problems with downloading then u can read this. So far i’ve gathered that it takes roughly 3-6 hours to download the client in the first place. Upon that it takes another 45min-1hr to extract the downloaded file. THEN u hav to actually install it, which was another hour for me. Currently i’m patching it, going on about 3 hours, and its done many patches, and gotten to 100% many times, but the TOTAL % is at 33, and rising 1% like every 10 min. If this game turns out to suck i’m going to be so pissed at the company for having the absolute worst DL speed ever, and update speeds……….GRRRR >:|

Patching for me got stuck at 30% total and there was no change in client version for about 45 minutes. I closed it and started ROM again and it started patching again where it left off with no problem. So yeah I’d recommend, if it appears to be stalling out, just restart. You won’t lose any progress.
I’ve played for about 2 months now, just had to reinstall on my new computer. To answer some of your questions: yes, it is worth it. The game is awesome, servers are reliable, and community is friendly. Company is cool too, Frogster just gave 20 free diamonds (‘real money’ currency) to players for every server on which they had a lvl 10 character. They also host polls on the website, the results of which directly affect the contents of the next patches.

Guys I know I have the comcast High speed internet and it takes awhile but i dont think it will be 3 days.. mine runs at 3mb a second but it always backtracks itself i noticed that is at for example 23.2 and then all of a sudden it goes to 32.5 and that pisses me off on top of that once it is done downloading it wont install or patch

I have spent the last day and a half downloading this game, and now I am stuck on patching for the last 7 hours. It keeps patching then I get an error with not text other than “lua” and “toc” with an Okay button. Not sure what the problem is since its just that, and the bottom bar percentage keeps getting stuck at 79%. Just a little frustrated at this point.

I’m having the same prob as Harry and Vordan, tho I don’t believe mines is reinstalling.. just the update stopping at around 79% while the download bar has reached 100%, then more ROMupdate’s that begin with “Game Path…etc. My concern after reading this froum is less the time now, tho obviously that still concerns me (yet, and tell me if its odd- I believe it only took MAYBE an hour to download not much longer) but my concern is that in about 2 and 1/2 hours of what you guys call “patch” updates from the runes of magic page u get to after choosing to “launch ROM”(either from your desktop or prompt) my client number started at like 2.1. 089 or something.. but kept going up til it got to 2.1.300, is that normal…
btw… as i was typing this complaint it finished at around 2.1.300 or what not, wierd right>>? IDK.. really like at all tho so can you still answer my question if the “patch” should’ve been dropping or rising??

I manage to download the game from the website, which is 5 gig for 8 hours since i have a stable download speed of 200-250kbps.. Now, im in the middle of updating it. Yeah, i got the issue of stuck at 79% and restarted many times. But, i dont think it is a problem. Everytime the updater restarted, i see that the version increase. However, it seems there are so many version downloaded. Already 3 hour of updating, and it is still not finish.. Damn. Hope it finish soon though..

Well the client download took about 2 hours for me. Installation was 20 min. Patching(2.1.0 to 2.1.5) was surprisingly fast like 5 min ….Not bad.

been trying to install this game for 2 days now. y’know, if it’d do all this downloading, patch after patch after patch after patch after patch after patch to infinity in the background, i’d be okay. could run it in the background, focus on other stuff. but with each patch the update throws a myriad number of update windows into the forefront, which i have to manually click, drag, to get out of the way. now, try 2 days of using your laptop, and the entire time having to repeatedly fend off windows that keep popping up in the foreground, over what you’re typing, obstructing your view. a spam/adware kind of experience, aesthetically. runes of magic, this is the most asinine install process for a game or program i’ve ever had to to thru, and i’m about ready to say f*ck you and cancel the install for good, cuz if you’ve botched the install process this badly, this game surely has got to be just as badly crafted.

Having the same problem. Have been thinking of playing WoW, searched for a free alternative, found RoM. Took hours to download the setup, then quite a quick install. And THEN I opened up the program, thinking I could play and it’s been downloading/updating for the past hour and a half. Bloody ridiculous -_-

My broadband connection gives 100 Mbps. It took about 6 hours to download ROM. After it was finally done (v….2010), I was given a message prompt that my computer doesn’t meet the GPU specification. As a result, although I was able to enter the game, the game looked like trash, so I uninstalled it. Didn’t expect that an ONLINE game would have such a high GPU requirement. I’ve played other similar online games such as WoW without the same graphic problem.
Lesson: Always check to see if you meet the computer system requirements before downloading any game especially one that is this ridiculously time consuming to download anyhow.

Current Version number is 2.1.5.2036. It takes a while to download using the FOG(custom program), not to mention slows the comp down like crazy. Finished updating after 2 hours or so, but its not that bad if you are doing other things online.

Ok, finally after patching the game..OH boy, its the first challenge, started playing the game and again my second challenge. Well i expected much more out of this game turned me off! Controling your mouse and the camera makes you so hard to move… Clicking on NPC’s to hand in quests are so damn hard so challenge + challenge = Epic Fail in my POV!

Not sure if this is addressed in the forums, but I noticed the path was thrashing my hard drive. I opened up Filemon and the patch was scanning my entire computer. I’m not entirely sure why it’s doing this, since it always seems to fail to find the DEFAULT install directory (C:\Program Files\Runes of Magic\). I’m not very impressed that the developers choose to scan your entire hard drive (sketch) and ultimately FAIL at guessing the default directory. Odd behavior..

I downloaded this game at 1,700kb/s with a DSL from the games homepage.
The patching is fast but I had installed “RoM” in another Hard Drive so the Patching stuck at 79%.
You have to have RoM installed in your ‘Program Files’-map in order for it to work. I’m not sure if you can move it to another harddrive after you’ve installed it tho’.

for those who dont know you do this by..
going to program files in the c drive or other
then go to program files and open your runes of magic directory or… FOLDER then plonk your downloaded patch installer in there and double click it…
make shore you do them in order obviously or it wont work…
just put them in the directory not in any of the subs inside the RUNES OF MAGIC FOLDER
ive made this as simple as i can for anyone who mite have problems…
have fun playing rom if you have the patience to get there

I downloaded the 5gig client np, took a bit its ok.
I installed the game… of course i expected updates. But… since allowing it to start patching, it’s been hours… HOURS! And I’ve gone from 19 gigs free spaces to nearly less than 10 and it’s STILL not fully updated. I am about to stop the updater and erase what I’ve done.
A pity really, I have heard such great things about this game but I am afraid it’s a Frankenstein monster of a game :/
I was not expecting this kind of wait… Even WoW is shorter than this with all the expacs
NOT TO MENTION atm this updater/patcher is POPPING UP over my current programs!!!! So I can’t even browse the internet without a window that will not minimize of move to the background cropping up! Ok, good news (I think) I relaunched the client and it still comfirms that I can ‘Start Game’ soo I clicked it with much dread.
- So far character creation is better than 90% of the ‘better’ mmo’s out there. (better than WoW :/ lol thats not hard though)
- Class selection is decent
- Tutorial was easy (anyone who has played an mmo before probably understands quest concept and movement)
It’s very similar to World of Warcraft so far, I am on a horse mount, I am an elf Druid (human has an alternative priest class). The graphics don’t seem too demanding I have them all in high setting with no lag as of yet, textures are better than WoW imo although bright and saturated like WoW (Aion was a bit more realistic environment wise)
So far I like it better than Perfect World and PW had sparked my limited interested more than 90% of the mmo’s I’ve tried. Today alone I installed 4 other games and of them I only kept one to try a bit longer.
SO, in the end if you like Aion’s character customization, long installs/updates, bright colorful environment, lots of class options, and world based game play then Runes of Magic may work for you.
Be warned AGAIN, it was a 5gig intial download then it took about 2-3 hours to update, with annoying windows popping up and disappearing. I will bookmark this page and update around lvl 10 or 15 (that is when I usually get bored with free mmo’s for lack of story and poor community attitude, in a game like WoW you pay to play so stupid people get ignored, but in free games with limited player support it’s not worth the hassle)

Aion, btw, is a pretty boring and repetitive grind. I don’t think they’ve patched in anything yet, like swimming, housing, or mounts.
I played from the open beta until the end of December, managed to get my main to lvl a cleric to 40, chanter to 35, and 6 more characters to lvl 30+ on the same server to get my account armor set. By the time I was done, I saw the game in a new light. I was bored, legions were becoming weighted, recruiting was hard to get active members, other active players wanted to be in ranked legions, which is limited…
In the end I didn’t quit because I was mad at people or mad at the game, I quit because it just didn’t quite convince me it was serious.
Aion compared to WoW is amazing graphically, the combos are nice, the battle music, etc… but when it comes to raising the bar, I’m afraid the only bar it raised was how long I spent customizing my characters. Other than that, it felt like another Asian free to play game.
Save yourself time and money, find something free or go with WoW (at least Blizzard is adding some nice features). Try Allods Online maybe.
Runes of Magic btw is a decent free to play. I am not very high yet because my husband got me to play Allods Open Beta with him. But Runes of Magic looks decent, characters customization is nice, quests are easy to understand. Unfortunately I had the bad luck of starting after a patch that broke an early quest NPC so i had to skip a few quest lines that couldn’t be completed. Partially the reason why I haven’t been on it lately.

This is pretty amazing. I’ve never seen a modern program that was this disorganized. And yet I feel sure that Frogster is going to want money from me. This thread started in Dec 2008, and there’s been no improvement in the last 15 months.
In another group, when people asked how to fix a problem, the Frogster admin said, “Oh just reinstall the whole thing.” Do these people have a clue what they are doing?

I’ve been downloading for a full 24 hours, and I’m still only downloading at the main game, I’m not on the patches yet, like wow. It’s sticking around 5.0 KB/s, it used to be 100KB/s, where it shot up in time and did 100 MBs in a short period. I think I’m going to stop downloading, and install it from a Mirror website, if none of this works, I’m going to play either Allods or Battle of the Immortals.

Well i currently started the downloaded the game 2 days ago and left overnight. Woke up and saw it was at 3000. I thought it was pretty reasonable. Left it overnight again and it went to 4000. Ok, so, here it is July 17, 2010… The thread started Dec. 2009 or something. All the same issues. Been downloading the client for 15 hours and I’m only @ 3087 of 6786 (my wife’s is much much worse). After this, then there are several hours of installation / updates.

hey i found that downloading the 2 files way instead of the single client alot faster. i was only bottlenecked because of my internet connection and it only took 3 hours to download the 6.8gb file. but the update process is super slow. im currently on 3.0.1.2192 and the latest is 3.0.2.2214….

Wow. I downloaded the game 4 days ago and I’ve been patching ever since. Guess I’m going back to WoW. I had played WoW for a long time and then quit. I was looking for something different when i got back into MMORPG’s so I thought i would try out RoM. If your downloading this game its safer to download the single file because I had to restart my part 2 download for some reason as it said “CRC problem with setup 6″ so I installed it….then BAM about 1-3 hours of patching, im downloading at a average 600-700kb/s rate and it is not going up one by one in version number, it jumps about 7-10 versions at once. the latest patch as of 23rd Sept 2010 is 3.0.3.2263 and im on 3.0.3.2250 so I should be done soon

I’ve downloaded the game and installed it..and just waiting for the patch and update to finish. However I’ve been having a slight issue and have been trying to figure out if anyone is having the same problem. I know people are saying, “hey just wait it out the patch will be done”..but no one has mentioned any errors before that, which have been occurring for me. Here’s how the process goes. Reopen RoM -> checks what version i have. (3.0.5) -> begins download at 0% and update at 30% -> Download bar will complete to 100% and the update to 80%..ok no big deal. -> a new window and loading bar will open. it will extract files and complete -> then copy the files and complete -> and then begin to do a rollback and i will get about 4 to 6 error messages saying that it can’t locate the file and the file is being used by another source. And it appears that after all of that, it wont do anything..but sit at the same percentage even after leaving it for several hours. I ended up closing it and reopening it, and oddly enough i thought it was finally working for me, as both bars finally reached 100% but then pulled out those 2 error messages again and did absolutely nothing. I must say that this is pretty frustrating and confusing. If anyone has a solution other than just letting it sit for hours, please say so, i would greatly appreciate it.

Guys, cmon. Yes, it’s a very harsh download. Do you guys realize how HUGE this game is? I downloaded the 7.5 gig file last night before I went to bed, and after I woke up I began patching. It’s been hours and you know what? I’m nothing short of impressed.

When I see that download bar and the percentage, I’m not praying for it to finish. I’m waiting in idle anticipation as it piles on years and years worth of content onto my PC.
Imagine spending tens of thousands of dollars on weed. Sure, you have to wait while the fork lift goes back and forth between the giant weed pile and your massive trucks, but all the while you’re mouth is watering and your eyes are sparkling in anticipation for the final result

However I’ve heard many sites say that this game is in favor of people who pay money (because you get certain advantages) and I read that some people dump upwards of a thousand dollars into their character. I’d recommend playing a more balanced game that doesn’t reward imbalanced items to people with big wallets.

7.26GB download then the patches on top of that. Wish I checked it was up to date to the correct version while I wasnt on the harsh 4-9pm period set by Virgin Media. 1.5GB my limit at this time yet cant see any size to these patches. I am estimating from my net meter over 1.2-1.3GB + 7.26GB (“full”client) to get to patch 3.0.8 I would have done some more downloading last night when “unlimited” period was on if I knew this before.

runes of magic is not worth downloading its just a cheap WoW copy i know people hate when ppl say this is like WoW im one of those ppl that hate it but this is just one of those scenarios where its true. it took me 2 days and a half to download this the combat system imo is horrible and the leveling system takes way to long too. the only good things in Runes of magic are the graphics and the fact that u can have a secondary class like rogue/mage or rogue/healer or etc. but i really think runes of magic isnt worth downloading but if u think it is send me an email to challenge wat i think of this game.

I downloaded the 7GB client (Beter graphics and sounds) and it got down in a bout 1 and a half hours, So now I’m patching, which hopefully won’t take THAT long.
On the 3.0.10.2373.en client, so must be close to finishing =) So don’t really know what the FUSS is about, lolz. Though I do agree that if it werel like everyquest (I think it’s that game) and downloads whilst you explore, then that would be cool too. Though it probably produces mass lag for some players.

mine reached 100% then it isn’t stop, keep downloading for what? the loading button still there, where is the start button. Hei Rune of Magic admin, can u see this is one of the longest complaint and critics from player whom feel pain with your game system. Can u fix it please?

I have finally been able to download everything after three full days of my poor computer working hard. Now I’ve gotten the home screen up where I can get into the game, I picked the server and all that, but the two bars of “download” and “update” are in the race to finish. The update bar starts at 32% and download at 4%, but by the end update is 79 and download is 100. It will update or whatever in that new window that pops up saying
“Runes of Magic Update #”
“Game Path…C:\Program Files\Runes of Magic\”
“Copying…” yadayadayada
and then a new window pops up titled “Patching WDB” that will freeze my computer. The first window closes and the Runes of Magic restarts all over again just to get the same result. It bugs me and annoys me. I’m about to delete the game and give up.

There is one giant problem with this game if your from Europe.
Lag is your worst enemy followed by extreme choppiness caused solely by it.
Trying to change the dev.ini actually does not work, regardless what server and language you select, then making it read only.
Until these developers pull their thumbs and arms out of you know where, this is an epic fail from a European perspective, shame because it looks good, but then just plays crap.
I have a good solid 50mb line, I have a high quality gaming rig i7, so it has nothing to do with my isp, nor with the machine, it’s entirely a geograhical based issue..ie cant play on eu servers.

100mb/s link here and been updating for 3 hours now.
Its the patcher itself that sucks, not your download speed. It wants to apply every single little update one by one which each have to go though a full install routine before it can download the next one.
What RoM needs is a “catch up” patch system that downloads all the little updates in large chunks. Would speed this horrible updater up considerebly.

so far i have got to the program and it was taking forever to install up date cuz the kb was at 31 per sec and droping at a steady rate so i closed it and oppened it sand it was at 100% and froze so i closed and now its running the 3.0.11.2393.en up date

I’m getting a problem here. First of all as you all know, the damn thing takes so long to download. About three hours for me, not much compared to other guys on here so I’m happy. But after I open it and it starts to upodate, the damn updater stops at 10% and an error message comes up. Anyone know what to do?

wow…this problems been the same since 2008?!
un-fucking-believable, if you’ll pardon me french! finished downloading an 8.31gig client installation file and now stuck at 10% on the update… it isn’t slow.. the download simply stops. it’s not my connection ‘cos i checked that…
worst thing though, i’ve been doing this a full day now, and it did it’s thingy one time around. and that itself took like 3 or 4 hours… but the game doesn’t start… i’m back at the updater and it’s stuck!

I downloaded the client in 7 _fucking_ days (4.2GB) and i installed it. Now i’m patching it, but it takes ages: the upside bar arrives to 100%, and then it restarts. The downside bar goes up to 75% and then restarts from 30%.
I want to cry ç_ç, it never ends :’(

Guys after downloading the RoM installation .rar file, and after installing it the client upgrades the version ONE BY ONE. So you guys have to wait for it to upgrade to the latest version before you can run the game. The versions are:-

As of now my download took 5 hours (slept through it) and the patching started and i went out for a movie…then I came back went for soccer practice. Came back client ready to go. Clicked Start Game and started playing. No Problems.

Its now 20 to 8 (day time) and i started downloading RoM at 4 o’clock so it hasnt been too bad for me compared to other people’s but ill see how it goes when i progress further

Mine doesnt get stuck at any percentage… it looks like its updating/downloading alright.. but then after it finishes, the client just closes and reopens, and BAM, have to update again… .

The reason it takes so long cause the patch starts somewhere around 4.0.0 or so. It takes forever cause you need it patched up to 4.0.1 or 4.0.3. The same thing happend to me. My Download goes to 100% but then the update always stops at 79%. It took me 1 day and a half just to install it -_-
