Java Sucks for Video Game Design

A few months ago in response to the announcement that Funcom was creating a Java Based MMORPG, I wrote a post that basically said that Java sucks for video game design.

It doesn’t take a genious to see that the only thing Java is good for is mobile game design because it temporarily doesn’t matter if graphics on your cell phone suck. A video game on the PC however? No. Java is completely unacceptable.

This of course pissed off a number of java programmers out there who added comments stating that Java is still alive. Some even tried to claim that Java is the future such as with the Google Android based cell phone. Well guess what? Adroid is Linux based. It takes java programming but will support any code that runs on linux in the future. And with that pretty Android high resolution screen, graphics are starting to matter. Game developers will drop Java.

The best Java has to offer in the form of video games are Runes of Magic HD and Tribal Trouble 2. Well if this is what Java can do it already dead. Take a look for yourself and tell me what you think. Can you suggest any good looking java games?

    There is a fundamental difference between “doesn’t exist” or “can’t be done”. Allow me to explain it to you:

    There aren’t any AAA Java games.
    They _can_ be made.
    Much FASTER and much EASIER than in C/C++, actually.

    “EASIER” then C/C++

    Well I don’t think so.
    well learning how to use Eclipse and optimizing your game will probably take the same time using C++

    Want proof that a good game can indeed be written in Java? Well, then check out Minecraft, because that game is written in Java.
