A while back we wrote that the Stargate Worlds MMORPG was dead due to massive financial trouble for Cheyenne Mountain and an Exodus of the Stargate Worlds Employees as well as legal trouble and bad timing. The news section still hasn’t been updated since May 26, 2009 and Cheyenne Mountain has not updated their news since April 15, 2008. I guess like many other Stargate fans I am a little disappointed and angry.
Stargate Worlds Fail:
Khestral Director of Quality Assurance from Cheyenne Staff answered some questions here but there is still not one single word on a possible open beta, release date, or any launch information. Apparently the civil suit against them is still going on with no word on the judgement yet. I am going to still call the game dead.
But why is Stargate Worlds the biggest MMORPG failure in History? That is easy. It had so much potential and everything going for it that the failure was magnified twenty times. Rabid Stargate fans and Sci-Fi fans were all over the place and completely primed for this genre of massively multiplayer online role playing game. when Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battle Star Galactica were all on the air it was the perfect time to launch a Stargate MMO and Cheyenne Mountain had heavy support from the Sci-Fi channel and the shows. The project could have been given to almost any other development studio and it would have at least launched by now. What a terrible failure and missed opportunity. Now legal troubles and funding are preventing the game from even entering open beta? What a joke. More like incompetence and poor timing. Stargate Worlds is the biggest MMORPG failure in history.

Wow what a rant. The fact of the matter is we know no true facts about the legal issues. We know some of the developers have not received pay checks. But also there has being a new update which including the answers by khestral and 4 new screenshots. As for open beta, it finished phase 1 at Christmas time and didn’t have much from what I hear. Also please realize it take 3-4 yrs to make an mmo, SGW have being in development for about 3.5 yrs.

@Aaron,
You liked that didn’t you? Thank you for your comment. Be that as it may the project is still a horrible failure by anyone’s standards. And it had so much potential too. Do you really believe it will be released in the next 6 months?
Jul 8, 2009 at 11:57:56
why does it have to be done in 6 months?
Jul 8, 2009 at 14:30:13
@Aaron,
Why does it have to be done in a year? Or in ten years? Or ever?…..
Jul 9, 2009 at 11:15:45
Man I don’t want to be rude but please! People wanted this game and wanted this game. Even the one brought out on a smaller scale but was on the PS 2 and that was fine was yanked from the shelves. Somebody filled their heads with alot of BS and they fell for it. Do the smart thing and sell the game to a developer for Playstation or Xbox. At least you’ll save face the game still has a following. And Lou you got some big shoes to try to fit in. Cam couldn’t do it.

I was in an early beta (alpha) last year.. it still needed a lot of work, and they were working hard on it.. The engine was working okay mostly, but there were bugs (of course that is what they were testing for)
Having played others, I found the direction they were going different, but playable.
I was hoping that things would go on.. but it doesn’t look that way
they didn’t have the bundle of money that Blizzard, or Sony could through at it.

hmmm… too bad on this one.
3.5 years of development go down the drain?
That is just Crazy!
I hope they are able to get back on their feet and finish this thing and be successful

@Peripher
I know how you feel. I feel the same way. Such a disappointment….
Jul 25, 2009 at 18:14:54
I with the admn. why hype it up for Stargate fans. 1st it’s in the wrong people hands. Give it to real gamers let them develope it. Let the developers at a real game console studio know the following it has. Hell I was happy with the one on Playstation till they snatched it of the shelf. It’s still selling on Amazon.com even though the actual game can’t be ordered.I still hope Xbox or Playstation get it. Saaaddd!

I’m sorry you feel this way. I know that many are mad about the problems with the game. Yet, it’s how you spend your time waiting that may influence some.
While some are waiting they play other games including stargate the last stand on game nights, listen to raido by the sg-uk command (sgw weekly), and having fun. Yes, there were/are set backs but THE GREEN LIGHT IS STILL ON!
Nov 1, 2009 at 12:35:48
@Brook
Yeah right. I guess we will see when it launches right?
Nov 1, 2009 at 13:50:49
Oh, I forgot to add this in. We found this out about a month ago. It’s an approximation but Tim Jenson said “Yes, but it is dependent on receiving adequate funding which in the current environment is more difficult that it once was.” after someone asked Do you expect a game release from CME in the next 12 months?
Their efforts are on SGW. Just wait and see. Maybe even say hi to some of us and enjoy yourself while you wait.
Dec 6, 2009 at 21:34:42
They have set a release date for early 2010 so screw you.
Dec 7, 2009 at 10:48:54
Oh yeah? Then why are they afraid to post that date on the Stargate Worlds web site or the Cheyenne Mountain one?
Dec 26, 2009 at 15:28:42
No, Stargate Resistance is to come out early 2010.
Everyone working on Stargate Worlds wants to tell us about SGW but right now their NDAs are in violation of doing so.
Dec 27, 2009 at 16:12:49
@Brook
Yeah Right. I’ll believe it when i see it.
Jan 21, 2010 at 20:02:39
Yes massive failure indeed. This should have been pushed through the pipe long ago. As a stargate fanboy I hate to say it but I just dont think this game will stand against the power of the new wow expansion and star wars MMO due to release this year.
As for putting an MMO on PS or xbox what in the world? have you ever played an MMO? Key bindings alone makes that comment redundant, not to mention expansions and other content releases which will be required for longevity. I agree with the OP the prime release for this was before SCIFI killed off SG1 and beloved atlantis… Anyway the lulz are: million dollar episode budgets but cant fund an MMO dev team. Fail.
Feb 11, 2010 at 14:34:09
@admin….well, Stargate Resistance is out on D2D. Even if it is bad, I heard some are going to buy it anyways because it’s the first official stargate game out on the market. I’ll believe it when i see it……go ahead and see it then.;)
Feb 11, 2010 at 16:27:54
@Brook
Don’t be an idiot. You just proved yourself wrong. This isn’t even Stargate Worlds is it? No it is Stargate Resistance: a completely different, third person shooter with very little other than team deathmatch and capture the flag.
Feb 13, 2010 at 07:15:51
Yes, I know it’s not SGW. Yet, it is the first official stargate game out now. Thought your yeah right on post #16 had to do with the “Stargate Resistance is to come out early 2010.” comment I made before you.
Anyways, Stargate Resistance is not a single player only or a first person shooter game. Here is what the offical Stargate Resistance website has to say about the game….
Stargate Resistance is a team-based 3rd person shooter set in the Stargate universe. Players will join a team based on which faction they choose and go head- to-head against other players as they vie for control of the galaxy across different worlds.

@Brook
Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment just declared bankruptcy.
Oct 22, 2010 at 09:33:39
Wait Wait Wait give the people a chance good games like Starcraft2, Diablo3 have been in dev for 5-10years and we never heard anything from blizzard till like 2 years before release
Oh and the last update on stargate worlds site was on Nov 13, 2009 and in 2010
Jan 26, 2011 at 16:25:55
hey, what if they handed SGW over to blizzard? they make awesome games, i mean just look at DIABLO, STARCRAFT AND W.O.W, they make millions off of those games
