Metaplace (previously Areae) is currently in closed beta testing and is quickly approaching open beta. Metaplace sets out to allow anyone to create their own virtual world according to founder Raph Koster. Metaplace would run in the browser using Flash.
In the below video review you see just what you can create in Metaplace. I personally would like to see stronger graphics and better character and web site design but that will come with time. You get a look at some of the game development tools which seem to resemble Sim City.

One interesting point is that you can import 3d models easily including from the Google 3d Warehouse. This may in effect allow those sad to see their Google Lively homes destroyed; restore them in Metaplace.
Metaplace hopes to monitize the sale of digital goods with microtransactions as well as premium services and design services for businesses and companies and possibly through advertising in the virutal worl.. Currently all of the objects, vehicles, plugins etc are free in the marketplace.

Metaplace uses open source technology of PHP, Linux, Apache, MySQL and C++ with Lua scripting language. The terms and conditions in Metaplace allow creators, designers, and programmers to retain intellectual property rights as long as they respect copyright and follow the rules.
Metaplace recently received $6.7 million in Series Be Funding from Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz and Charles River Ventures and Crescendo Ventures totaling $9.4 million in funding.

Why did metaplace have to shut down? Can’t you make another site to look like it?! I loved metaplace. Now i lost ALL my friends.
