The population on servers of the Star Wars Galaxies massively multiplayer online role playing game continues to drop as STAR WARS fans prepare for the new Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG. Yes it is a long way off. On October 15, 2009 at 5pm PDT, SWG will be shutting down 12 servers said Community Manager Draakull. This is almost half of the current 25 servers. Creation of new characters on these servers has already been disabled. I would expect more to shut down as the SWTOR relase date approaches.
Die Star Wars Galaxies! Die!

You can use the free character transfer service to get off of the below servers by October 15, 2009. But do not worry Galaxies fans, the SWTOR graphics aren’t much better so it shouldn’t be too much of a transition.

Even with the server closures SWG is in serious trouble. I’ve logged in for their free month offer for vets (I played for 5 years ‘03 to ‘09) Even the main cities are still vacant. Only the starter city has any population, and even at peak times is less than 100 players. It’s sad to explore the once bustling metro areas to find them deserted. PVP consists of the same groups of maybe 75 players on Bloodfin server. Sad that SOE ruined this once thriving game. Let’s hope it was a lesson learned.
