SWTOR to be the Greatest Failure in History of MMOs – says EA Employee & Lackluster Closed Beta Feedback

I have been saying it since the begining. The Star Wars the Old Republic massively multiplayer online role playing game from Bioware is in big trouble. First it was the Sucky Graphics in SWTOR, then the fact that Space Combat in SWTOR Looks Like Shit.

Now I am getting some serious backup to my breaking claims. Initial limited closed beta feedback is not good. The players are not happy and are very dissapointed. Now a claim from an EA employee saying that the game will be a huge failure:

“They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. Shit you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that? And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking, and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch. Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA….”

SWTOR Failure

Check out the below high definition trailer video. It is about 1.5 minutes long.

Amazingly the game still will not launch until the second quarter of 2011.

Poor MMOs, being dominated by the WOW community. Hard to swallow the fact that big name companies are pooring large dollars into development of games meant to compete with successful MMOs. Will any one game not made by Blizzard be able to be successful again?

Guild war 2 seem to be the only game that can compete with the best MMORPG in the market now.
    That just my thought…

Final Fantasy Online(FFXI) says hello. Still going strong with a sturdy community and constant updates despite being almost a decade old.

I’ve played the closed beta, and personally I think the game is amazing. Besides, nothing could be worse than Star Wars Galaxies. SOE can ruin anything.

I played SWG as well and it was by far the most fun I have ever had in an MMO, until the NGE came out and ruined the game. I had high hopes for this game to take me back to those fun times, but I see them fading away quickly.

SWG was something all on its own. We can’t expect it to take us back to those days. This new game looks great. Haters gonna hate, players gonna play, This looks like it’s going to be a great addition to the Star Wars saga, and will be a new adventure and new experience. Personally I know I, and all my buddy’s are going into this game with open eyes and minds. SWG will never be back, but who’s to say this wont rival SWG in the amount of fun and entertainment in a new and different way.

But yea I’ll be fair and say that I dont like how the space battles look but i mean the graphics in this game looks similar to WoW, (for lack of a better word)cartoonish, except it looks a bit upgraded

i think it will turn out great come on now….they said at one time that they were scared of star trek online which was a big flop….not that great of a game….im sorry, im a star trek fan but i couldnt see it being that great even before i played it….i think they are just nervous and are also waiting for World of Warcrafts new expansion and the hype it will carry to get over with before they release it….and since when do movie or game critics get it right? its their opinion not everyone elses….

SWG had so much crap to do, so many prof. B4 the nerf. Chasing the jedi goal was very time consuming but very addictive. Space combat was cool as hell and the ship building was sweet. They fucked up that game trying to be like WoW. Let’s hope the mistake is not repeated.

Darth Vader comment – epic. I will love this game and cannot wait to leave Azeroth behind for it. Can’t wait!! 6 years of WoW (which I loved) and the content is meh at this point, yet I still find myself replaying the KOTOR games.

I’m sick of WoW and I’m burnt out on fantasy settings for MMOs. I really can’t wait for a sci-fi setting and Star Wars is a great one! I’m hoping what we’re seeing so far is alpha graphics and that they’ll be polished up before release, and the space combat looks interesting. It looks like a totally different experience than the rest of the game and could turn out to be a lot of fun. I really want to know what to expect at end game tho hehe.

actually i think swtor will still take WoW maybe knock it down a few more knoche’s since blizz has been losing 300k subscriptions left and right every day due to the patch’s and content already beaten etc. and majority of that they made it too easy to the loot without earning it first etc. i’m sure you get my point in that it is not going to be epic fail bull shit

i feel ya there O.o i have played WoW just as long i’m playing WAR just to buy my time for swtor to come out as well or even ddo which is another decent mmo also rift is good in the beginning but it is the content is very hard to reach unless your on that one 24/7 which some only can only manage 8 hrs a day or less depending what is going on in RL

I find it entertaining that the disgruntled players from SWG pre-NGE are so hyped about a Star Wars MMO that is even more class restricted and dumbed down than the NGE. SWG has evolved since NGE and many of the pre-CU / NGE players that recently came back to the game have told me that it’s like playing an entirely different game, and were enjoying it until the announcement to end the game.

I have to agree with the author, SWTWoW will be an epic fail. The fact that they are closing SWG 5 days prior to launch seems like a desperate act to try to force the existing community to make the switch to the new game.

I was considering giving SWTOR a try and continue my SWG subscription, but I think I’ll just find another game to play afer SWG is gone. I know there are others who feel the same way. It is likely that many will flock to the SWG Emulation servers instead.

    Oh yay, Pre-CU! (Sarcastic)

In my honest opinion, pre-CU sucks by comparison to SWG today, but it is better than no SWG at all.

All of the SWTOR hate coming off the articles in this website makes me giggle like a little school girl. The Space fight graphics are being compared to EVE… I love the space graphics, and the video used to show how ‘cool’ EVE is… horrible. Buncha ships standing still, some guy (with Italian? accent) giving commands to everyone… boring. And the graphics were crap. The SWTOR space fight graphics looked fun! The voice overs add a nice touch to everything in the game (How miffed are players when a few NPCs have voice, but most don’t? Or, as in WoW, the NPCs speak maybe the first sentence, and then never again.) And the game play graphics in general look great to me – we have to remember that BioWare isn’t trying to make the characters look like photographic people – they’re making them look like you’re playing a game. And a well designed one at that.

Until it’s played, and launched, none of us can say how well it will do. And I never put trust in anyone who breaks the Beta Vow Of Silence. These are usually people too dumb to play the game, or who got stung as a child.

I’m not going to buy it, but when I read all this, it’s very funny.

You know, all the people talk about swtor like they can create better. ” swtor is a failure blablabla”.

listen if the game is a failure, there is a lot of people are totaly retard ^^. I know you can be like me and play something else.

But a failure is something that no body gonna play, not a game that have win more price than yours.

It’s hard to say that for me because i’m a addict fan of wow. but swtor have many chance to be better. I don’t like science-fiction that why I don’t buy it.

Don’t you have open a dictionnary only one time in your life ? failure is an absolute. there is a lot of people gonna play that game. And when I say a lot, I mean a LOT. a good exemple of failure is facebook game, THAT IS FAILURE.

So, wow rock, but swtor rock to. maybe more than wow in 2 years. no body can say what it’s gonna be.

And if you answer negatively after me, I answer that :

Go play car town my little friend, when you gonna work in the video game industry, you will be able to debate.

Its pretty much true, the game is complete garbage from the core mechanics, class design, User interface, and end game content design. Only thing it has going for it is the single player story line (and that will not hold subscriptions)

Honestly if these aspects are not addressed shortly after release i wouldnt be surpised if the game gone cashshop/f2p in half a year.

Well, we’re here… and almost everything he predicted came true. Already this game is bleeding subs (1 mil at launch and now 350k during peak), the game is over 20GB, people hit level cap on the first day only to discover there is literally no end-game content besides 1 small raid, the UI is abysmal and the only good thing about the game is the voice acting (and even that is giving it too much credit ie. “i’ll accept your payment… in kisses” -_- quality BioWare writing).

The forums are rife with people having second thoughts about subbing past the free month, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this Titanic goes F2P within 3 months.

It really is a 2004 MMO made in 2011. Or I should say in truth… A Massively SinglePlayer Online RPG…

Agree. It is kind of fun to play solo… but got VERY boring around 30… insanely boring around 45.

I wanted a mmo. I actually left a mmo with some friends so we could play together in this. We have played together twice so far. It’s like the game is designed to force you apart… not bring you together like a mmo should.

And forget about Vent… the sound they are so proud of pretty much rules out any kind of system like that. You can’t talk to each other in vent and play the game at the same time. The game just has way too many voice interuptions.

Bottom line: The game is WAY WAY WAY too easy and it is designed as a single player game and not as an MMO.

    Btw:
SW fans are stupid sheep :
they buy a logo ,even if it tastes ,looks ,smells like crap ,as long as the logo is here ,they re satisfied XD
Proof ? not a single decent SW game for 5+ years,

SWTOR would be fun if it was like SWG or at least KOTOR. You can’t switch to companion control anymore, so theyre basically dumb pets now.
Also, the plot tells you like OMG you are UNIQUE, nobody ever opened this vault in 1000 years. YOU are the FIRST. So you open the vault, find a minion there, then come out into the world and everyone has the very same minion, even named same. Unique my ass.
Was it so hard to randomize companion encounters and names? You get one companion, I get another. Or at least give them different models, races, even if classes are same. What a joke, no variety at all.

The group conversation feature is a joke as well. You can’t actually roleplay or backstab one another. It only works well if everyone plays nice and agrees to be in a group. You can kick a member at any time, so no, you can’t really do all that fancy plot twisting politicking. You try to mess with my way of NPC conversation, i just kick you from group, lol.

Nearly 50 and i rarely start up the game because of the linearity.

Only thing it has going for it is the single player story line (and that will not hold subscriptions). This is true EVERYTHING else has issues or is lacking something.

But what is really important and forgotten by most.
They misuse the word of planet. They are more like instanced questzones with not much freedom of where to go. Its like they made a very small part of a planet and thats why it is not a miracle speeders are so slow.

If its true about how much they spent on this game, then you cant tell. Rift, lotro, wow, (insert mmo title here) have things like customizable UI, cosmetics, lots of raids and instances, great looking gear, you can change your advanced classes and even have multiple roles, dungeon finders, etc. Swtor has none of the above, Its like a they took all the best developments (and some of the basics like a decent auction house) in MMOs in the last 5 years and said “Nah, we dont need any of that, we have voiceovers” lol, and LOTS of bugs. I was signed up on the swtor site in 2010 looking forward to this, But it fell flat, other than the single player part. Could be fun if they fixed whats broke and made it more dynamic, brought in features we all expect in any modern mmo and gave you the option to just have a traditional text box to read the quests instead of all the voiceover. Eventually youll just hit spacebar all the time.

George Lucas shouldnt ahve cancelled SWG. It was a much better mmorpg than TOR is. TOR is nothing more than a console game, like playing KTOR 3 on the playstation. Has none of the features, world, lore, and excitement most mmo’s have/should ahve. I had more fun exploring SWG in 1 hour than i did in a month of playing TOR.

And yeah the game has nothing new, innovating, or groundbreaking. Same crap. I hope Lucas Arts learns its lesson this time, thats 2 mmo’s they faied at. And one of them could ahve been saved with some love and listening to the gamers (SWG).

Only thing TOR has going for them is the fans, once they start drying up due to the new game feeling wearing off will be a big pile of steaming monkey turds.

Well this article explains a lot, and it must be true. Also Bob Dole above me has some proof of how utterly bad the programming is from this game.

Your like questioning yourself when does the fun part start and around 35+ its getting horribly linear more and more until 50. When your 50 you notice the end game is even more crap. Besides that its the most ugly maze loading screen world i have ever seen in any MMO. EVERYTHING about this game it is unbelievable lifeless.

Well, i´ve played and i can tell: IF you manage to hit 50 (not cause its hard, but cause you´ll quit by being bored out of it), you will see that there´s nothing to do, besides running the SAME 3 warzones all day. Huge lack of content, ZERO world PVP (Illum is bugged like hell) and lack of depth, made me go back to Rift. Bioware has dropped the ball on this one. Well, that´s what you would expect when you get EA and the SAME PvP team behind Warhammer in the same title.

The most lifeless, dead MMO world I have ever seen. If this game had been released without it’s Star Wars License, it would already be dead.

First DA2 being a rushed pile of garbage, then SWTOR completely failing on some of the most fundamental elements of MMO design that even the smaller games manage to get right (Wait so one faction’s mirror classes are NOT supposed to be significantly better because of animation issues? Oh god, who would have thought!), then the ending of ME3.

Bioware – from industry standard for quality to steaming pile of shit who’s only remaining rep is for insulting and belittling their customers – in just one calender year!

If SWG was re-released in its VANILLA form…it would blow the shit out of SWTOR. It was an AMAZING game back then. Very Sandbox, cross classes, gathering with placeable structures, 24?(if memory serves) classes total! etc etc It was a superb game.
SWTOR on the other hand…well its got F2P potential i’ll give it that. It will die a slow death, due to the hordes of fanboi’s defending BW/EA every friking move! By death i mean to the point it goes F2P. Ironically this will be the best move BW/EA could do with it…as they will gain a HUGE number of players to spend cash in a new cash shop for it.
I give the game about a year from now in its current form – then it’ll F2P – i might go back and have a look at how its changed at that point. Although i doubt it…it pales in comparison to LOTRO, DC Universe etc.

@Jason: Amazing what EA can do to a studio, ain’t it? You can almost directly chart the decline of Bioware’s game quality against EA’s involvement in the company. Not much difference in 07-09 immediately after EA bought them out (Bioware was finishing up projects started before EA) then a steady decline in quality until… this.

Look at Bioware’s games list and keep in mind a 2-3 year dev cycle, then chart the amount of dumbing down and quality VS amount of time EA had owned the company. Interesting results if you think about it.

Also interesting is that on the current games list on that page EA has placed Warhammer Online, Dark Age of Camelot, and Ultima Online as Bioware games, when everyone knows Bioware had nothing to do with them. Those were Mythic games. Wonder why they are listed there now? Does anyone know?
